Black Sun

Steven Kaye's irregularly updated blog

I finished Tim Lebbon's The Nature of Balance yesterday, which is a tasty novel combining Arthur Machen (specifically his story "The Terror") and James Herbert (Lebbon doesn't stint on the gore) in a tale of nature gone mad and lashing out at humanity. I'd been meaning to read more Lebbon after enjoying his despairing "The Stuff of the Stars, Leaking" in The Children of Cthulhu. A friend is happily house-hunting in Vermont, and tells me that an Indian shaman is using body piercings, tattoos and implants to better resemble the cat totem of his tribe. Not in Vermont, although she did tell me that she saw lots of people with body piercings there - this was apparently an episode of Larry King Live. The guy injected collagen into his upper lip, pierced it and has 'whiskers' he screwed into these implants. He also filed his teeth into points and has stripes tattooed on himself. He's currently looking for someone to develop a functional tail for him. Then again, people inject botulism toxin into their faces to remove wrinkles, and they're not even doing it for religious reasons. In other news, my home state is still facing drought conditions, as is the state I work in. We've got electricity, California has water - surely something can be worked out.
